The group of tranquil and car-free islands lie just a short ferry-ride from Istanbul, and offer the perfect antidote to the exciting but sometimes hectic sightseeing in the bustling city. Four of the biggest islands are inhabited, with Buyukada and Heybeliada being the two most popular with visitors. Bicycle or horse-drawn carriage are the only form of transport on the islands. The multi-storied 19th century wooden houses on the islands are beautifully crafted, and both islands make a pleasant destination for an afternoon visit or a longer stay at a room in the beautiful turn-of-the-century hotel called the Splendid Pallas.
