The US House of Foreign Affairs Committee, on Wednesday, has pressed Turkey, on protecting the rights of minorities. Turkey has been urged to return all properties of the church and historic monuments, of importance to Christians, to the minority community.
Religious minority groups like, the Ecumenical Patriarchate of the Greek Orthodox Church, have become susceptible to discrimination and are not given their lawful identity.
In 1971, in order to bring higher educational institutions under its control, Turkey ordered the closure of a prominent seminary in Istanbul, since the Byzantine days, belonging to the Orthodox Church.
Turkey has protested, noting in a spending bill, that a large number of Christians and Jews have made Turkey their home since olden times, and the constructive steps it has taken in making the country secular and tolerant towards religion. It also highlighted measures taken to preserve religious site of Christian and Jews.
Californian Republican, Dana Rohrabacher, eventually voting for the text, questioned the bias for nailing Turkey, when it had a better track record of tolerance, as compared to other Muslim dominated nations.
